Starting something new always comes with a mix of excitement and uncertainty – especially when you’re balancing school with work, family, or other responsibilities. If you’re beginning your journey as an online graduate student at #ILLINOIS, you’re not alone. These first 30 days lay the groundwork for your success, and knowing what to expect can help you make the most of them.
Week 1: Getting Oriented
You’ll spend your first week getting familiar with your courses, technology and expectations. From exploring Canvas to reviewing syllabi and checking important dates, there’s a lot to take in. Set aside dedicated time to get oriented, and don’t hesitate to ask questions – your instructors and support staff are here to help.
Pro tip: Bookmark your course calendars and log in regularly, even if you’re just looking around. Confidence starts with familiarity.
Week 2: Finding Your Flow
By the second week, coursework will begin to feel more structured. Weekly readings, discussion posts, and assignments will become part of your routine. This is a great time to build a study schedule that fits your life.
Whether you're working full-time, managing a household, or both, flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of online learning at Illinois – and finding your flow now will pay off later.
Week 3: Connecting with Your Community
Just because you’re online doesn’t mean you’re on your own. Instructors are approachable, classmates are engaged, and discussion boards can be surprisingly energizing.
Even if you’re not naturally outgoing, participating in conversations or group projects – especially if your program uses platforms like Slack or Zoom – can help you feel more connected. The relationships you build now can support you throughout your academic journey and beyond.
Week 4: Gaining Confidence
By the end of the first month, you’ll likely feel more confident navigating your courses, managing your time, and engaging with peers. That initial overwhelm will begin to fade, and online learning may start to feel second nature.
You’re not just learning course material – you’re also developing new habits, routines, and digital skills that will serve you well throughout your program.
Looking Ahead
Everyone's first 30 days look a little different, and that’s okay. The most important thing? Keep going. Ask questions, be curious, and give yourself grace as you adjust. You’re doing something ambitious – and you’re not alone in it.
