For many adults, the path to a bachelor’s degree isn’t a straight line. Careers take off, families grow and responsibilities shift – and sometimes, college plans get paused. The University of Illinois is helping learners pick that path back up with the launch of its new online Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) degree-completion program.

Designed specifically for students who have earned college credit but have not yet finished their undergraduate degree, the BLS transforms past academic progress into forward momentum through a flexible, supportive and career-focused experience.

Built for Real Life

The online BLS is a fully online, mostly asynchronous program, giving students the freedom to complete coursework on their own schedules without required live sessions. With multiple start dates throughout the year and part-time enrollment options, learners can begin when the time is right and move at a pace that fits alongside work, family and other commitments.

Just as important as flexibility is support. The program offers proactive, personalized guidance, helping students transfer previously earned credits, plan their path to graduation and stay on track from enrollment through degree completion.

An Interdisciplinary Degree with Career Impact

The BLS provides a strong liberal arts foundation while emphasizing practical, transferable skills employers consistently seek. Students develop strengths in communication, critical thinking, leadership, data analysis and cultural competency — capabilities that translate across industries and roles.

Learners can tailor their studies through one of three concentrations:

  • Health and Society
  • Global Perspectives
  • Management Studies

Courses are drawn from more than 25 academic departments, creating an interdisciplinary experience that connects broad knowledge with real-world application. The program’s focus on workforce relevance, equity and accessibility helps empower non-traditional and historically underserved students to complete their degrees, expand career opportunities and increase lifetime earning potential.

Turning Credit Into Credentials

One of the biggest concerns for returning students is whether their earlier coursework still counts. The BLS is structured to maximize prior college credit, ensuring that previous academic efforts remain valuable and meaningful on the path to graduation.
