Online Graduate Degree Programs

SELECTING AN ONLINE PROGRAM OF STUDY

DUAL ADMISSION DECISION

To be admitted into a graduate program at UIUC, applicants must meet admission requirements for both the proposed program of study and the Graduate College.

ADMISSION DECISION NOTIFICATION

The proposed program of study office will evaluate your application and recommend a decision for admission to the Graduate College. Once a decision has been made, the Graduate College will notify applicants by email with instructions to access the application system to review the decision letter. For more information on notification of admissions contact the Graduate College Admissions Office by phone: (217) 244-4637 or by email: grad@illinois.edu.

Helpful Tips to Prepare for the "ApplyYourself" Application Process

ApplyYourself (AY) is the application tool that provides the software and database used for collecting and processing graduate applications to the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. Here are a few tips to consider prior to starting the AY application process.

Have You Met Minimum Admission Requirements?

  • Visit the departmental web page to see if the program requires any additional information or samples of your work (writing sample, portfolio, etc.).
  • Find out what exam scores are required by the program (GRE, MCAT, TOEFL, etc.). You can enter scores into the application, however, you will need to request that official scores are sent to the University of Illinois from the testing agency. (For ETS our school code is 1836.)

Gather Your Personal Information

  • Permanent and current address, phone number and current email address
  • UIN/University Identification Number (for students who previously attended UIUC)
  • Last term attended at UIUC (if applicable)
  • Social Security Number (not required)
  • Citizenship status and birthplace location. If you are not sure of your citizenship status, go to http://www.grad.illinois.edu/admissions/instructions/02b
  • If you are a resident alien, you will need a resident alien number. In addition, your lawful Permanent Resident Card ('Green Card')Letter of Approval Notice from USCIS, or a copy of the Personal Information page from your passport as well as your Permanent Resident stamp should be uploaded directly to the online application
  • If you are an international student, a copy of your passport will need to be uploaded directly to the online application. In addition, if you are currently on a non-student visa and plan to remain on this visa during your studies at Illinois, you will need a copy of your current visa to be uploaded directly to the online application

Identify the Correct Program Description

Many degrees and programs have similar titles, thus it's important to know the exact Proposed Degree Program Name and Program or Certificate Selection for your intended academic program of study before accessing the Graduate College "ApplyYourself" application tool. Review the chart below for a list of program names with ApplyYourself program descriptions (e.g., M.S. Taxation is the degree and "Accountancy" is the ApplyYourself program name.)

Still have questions? Contact the Online Graduate program of study office, the Graduate College or the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning.

Educational Institution Information

Filling out the application will be much easier if you have a copy of your transcript(s) from each institute or higher education you have attended. You will need to know:

  • Month and year of start and end dates
  • Name of the degree awarded and when
  • Overall GPA and major GPA
  • Major area and name of completed minors
  • Be prepared to upload your transcripts (and diplomas/certificates of degrees if your degree has been awarded and is not listed on your transcript) directly to the online application for each post-secondary institution you have attended

References/Letters of Recommendation

Be ready to include name, address, phone, email, employer and title for each entry. Recommenders will be required to submit letters of recommendation online.

Statement of Purpose and Resumes

Most departments require a statement of purpose or personal statement. Also, be prepared to upload your most recent resume.

Paying the Application Fee

  • Have a MasterCard or Visa credit card ready to pay the application fee
  • Domestic applicants - $70.00 required application fee
  • International applicants - $90.00 required application fee
  • If you are a University of Illinois employee (Academic Professional, Civic Service, or Faculty only) or a fee waiver recipient (McNair Scholar, Project 1000, CIC Free App) be sure to choose the correct waiver type in the drop down on the application
