The Master of Science in Journalism (MS) program prepares students for jobs in digital media and newsrooms in as few as two semesters.
While students can come from any academic background and a bachelor's degree in journalism isn't required, the program is designed to meet the goals of three types of students:
- Students who have recently earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism or a related field and want to explore a specific type of journalism in greater depth
- Mid-career journalists who want to expand their professional skills in science, technology, data, investigative or immersion journalism
- Students who seek to complement their expertise in other areas (including but not limited to science, technology, engineering and math) with journalistic skills for communicating with the public
Students can pursue the degree on campus or, if they choose the focus on Science and Technology Journalism, they can complete the degree entirely online.
- With this flexible, hybrid/online program, students can:
- Complete the degree or stackable professional credentials in as few as two semesters.
- Complement their scientific expertise with journalistic skills for communicating with the public.
- Take coursework in science and data journalism and multimedia storytelling.
- Examine the science of genomics and its applications to environment, health, and technology.
- Work on professional news platforms and explore a topic in depth in their master’s project.
Alumni of the Journalism program have gone on to become science communicators and editors, news directors, digital content producers, and more, working at places such as NASA, national science laboratories and research centers, and nonprofits in the science, environment, and energy sectors.
