About Us

A degree designed to meet animal health professionals at all stages of their careers and help them reach the next level. This 32-credit hour degree requires 20 hours of electives allowing students to design their curriculum to meet their goals. 

In the Master of Veterinary Science (MVS) degree, you will develop critical thinking skills, and increase your depth and breadth of veterinary professional knowledge in the animal health industry. You will learn a new approach to solving clinical problems by combining data collection, analysis, and interpretation.  

Graduates of the MVS program have the skills needed to thrive in multiple career paths, including specialized clinical practice, education, industry, government, clinical research, and advancing to veterinary school.

The curriculum is intentionally flexible to meet the career goals of each student. You and your advisor will map your path to graduation.


To satisfy the degree requirements, you need to complete:
  • 32 hours of coursework
  • 2 required courses:
    • Capstone Project: VCM 595: Integrative Learning Experience (8 hours)
    • VCM 565: Biostatistics, Information Management, Data Analytics (4 hours)

Sample Course Information


VCM 507 Veterinary Form and Function

Focuses on foundational knowledge in anatomy and physiology, with an introduction to case-based thinking while studying the major body systems. Students will learn how to identify anatomical structures in different body systems, summarize similarities and differences between species, explain normal physiological systems in domestic animal species, and predict which body systems are abnormal.


VCM 509 Biology of Veterinary Pathogens

Students will learn how to identify host defenses and summarize similarities and differences between body systems, identify and explain tissue tropism and disease patterns of different veterinary pathogens, and predict which body systems will be targeted by pathogens.


VCM 561 Biosecurity Systems

The course will allow students to design a comprehensive protocol for a given site. This course emphasizes optimizing interventions in swine production systems to minimize the economic impact of infectious disease.

VCM 568 A Systems-Based Approach to the Operation of Livestock-Based food Production Systems I

In this course you will explore how structured, systems-based thinking – Thinking Process techniques - can be applied to the management of the supply chain for livestock-based food systems.
